CloudOps Cloud Evening

With executives from five of the world's leading cloud computing companies in Montreal to attend CRIM' annual Boule de Crystal event, we're running an evening event on cloud computing at CloudOps' offices in RPM. 

We'll start with an overview of cloud computing from Bitcurrent's Alistair Croll, followed by brief presentations from Amazon, Google, IBM, Salesforce, and Savvis. Then we'll break out into cloud-specific "genius bars" where attendees can work side-by-side with our five visitors.

Jinesh Varia, Technology Evangelist, Amazon Web Services

As a Technology Evangelist at Amazon, Jinesh Varia helps businesses take advantage of disruptive technologies like Cloud Computing that are changing the way businesses compete in the new web world. Jinesh has spoken at more than 150 conferences and User Groups around the world. His passion lies in designing cloud architectures and leveraging web services.

Prior to joining Amazon as an evangelist, he held several positions in UBmatrix including Solutions Architect, Enterprise Team Lead and Software engineer, working on various financial services projects including Call Modernization Project at FDIC. He was also lead developer at Penn State Data Center, Institute of Regional Affairs. Jinesh’s publications have been published in ACM, IEEE and now in a book.

Peter Coffee, VP and Head of Platform Research, Salesforce

Peter joined salesforce.com inc. in January of 2007. He had previously spent 18 years as a senior contributor to the enterprise IT journals eWEEK and PC Week. Based in the Los Angeles area, he works with IT professionals and ISVs to build a global community based on Force.com: the salesforce.com Platform Cloud.

Peter has 28 years’ experience in guiding the introduction and adoption of new technologies and practices as a developer, consultant, educator, and internationally published author and lecturer. He has appeared on national newscasts in the U.S., Mexico and India addressing a broad range of eBusiness issues. He chaired the four-day Web Security Summit conference in Boston during the summer of 2000; he has been a keynote speaker, moderator or workshop leader at technical conferences, business computing events and academic gatherings throughout the U.S. and in India, Singapore, Australia, China, Korea, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Spain, Italy and The Netherlands.

Peter was previously the first manager of desktop computing integration at The Aerospace Corporation, where he also worked in space systems project management and in space-asset applications of artificial intelligence techniques. Before that, he held various project management roles in arctic development, chemical facility construction, and alternative-fuels production for Exxon operations in New Jersey, Louisiana, California and Alaska’s Beaufort Sea.

He holds an engineering degree from MIT and an MBA from Pepperdine University, where he also served as an instructor for core classes in IT management; he has held faculty appointments in computer science (artificial intelligence) at UCLA and in business analytics at Chapman College. He is the author of two books, How To Program Java and Peter Coffee Teaches PCs.

Patrick Chanezon, Google Developer Relations Manager - Cloud Platform

Patrick Chanezon joined Google in 2005, he manages the Cloud and Apps Developer Relations team in San Francisco. Previously he has been a Developer Advocate, building and growing developer ecosystems for HTML5, OpenSocial, Google Checkout and the AdWords API, and worked as a software architect at Sun Microsystems, AOL, Netscape and Accenture.

Tim Beerman, Vice President of Managed Hosting Product Management and Engineering, Savvis

Tim Beerman is the vice president of managed hosting product management and engineering for Savvis globally. Having joined Savvis in 2008, Tim is responsible for world-class infrastructure products that serve as the backbone of the company’s managed hosting portfolio. Tim oversees five key product lines for Savvis: Symphony cloud, managed hosting, storage, data protection and security.

Prior to joining Savvis, Tim worked for Citigroup, the global financial services organization. While at Citigroup, he managed a development team of more than 100 people. There, he demonstrated a deep understanding of complex system architectures and affirmed his ability to integrate all aspects of the IT organization. Previously, Tim worked with a number of high-tech organizations throughout the United States.

Tom Wheatley, IBM Distinguished Engineer and Specialty Service Area Leader, Transition and Transformation Technology, Global Technology Services

Tom Wheatley is a Distinguished Engineer and Global Specialty Service Area leader with IBM Global Technology Services. He has 27 years experience in the information technology industry. His areas of expertise include IT strategy, IT architecture, end-to-end system design, system design for high performance/high availability, IT operations effectiveness, data center consolidation and cloud computing.

Tom has contributed to the IBM cloud architecture and is one of the senior spokesperson on that topic. He has driven the definition, development and implementation of effective IT solutions for numerous clients across multiple industries. His current responsibilities include a global IBM mission to use innovative technology solutions to improve the effectiveness, transformation and quality of IBM strategic outsourcing service delivery. Mr. Wheatley is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He is also focused on the technical vitality and career development of the GTS technical community.
